In a cool event that preempted the upcoming 2020 IIHF Under 20 World Junior Championship, Russia took gold by defeating Canada 2-1 in double overtime of the U18 World Junior A Challenge.

The overtime hero was Shakir Mukhamadullin, whose one-timer from the point gave the Russians the exciting victory over Canada East.

Here’s how the OT winner looked courtesy of the World Junior A Challenge Twitter account:

Pretty nice set up and a good shot from Mukhamadullin. Try pronouncing that name five times fast. 🙂 I kinda can do it once from my Russian I took back in high school. I wonder about the spelling though. Maybe I can guess.

Счакыр Мукамадулйн.

I’m probably off. Here are some more cool photos of the Russian gold medal win:

Via my Russian knowledge,it’s easy to tell the meaning of this word. Чемпион = Champion 🙂

Two Russians. Two Canadians. Two Americans.

Here was the Canadian tying goal by Ryan Alexander that forced sudden death. A well executed passing play.

Team USA took home the bronze by edging the Czech Republic 2-1.

It’s always cool to familiarize yourself with potential future stars and draft picks who in most cases are at least two years away. After Christmas, the WJC gets going on Boxing Day. It should be a great tournament. Look for more coverage on Hockey Prospects!
